The Polyclinic, established in 1948 as a private limited company is the oldest corporate medical institution in Kerala, probably in the whole of India. It was founded by Dr.V.N.Krishna Iyer. After a long period of service in the medical field the company celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1998 and will be celebrating it’s Shashtyabdapoorthy
( Diamond Jubilee) in 2008.

Dr.V.N.Krishna Iyer was an eminent physician and diagnostician, a very good obstetrician and even a surgeon at times. On his return from England after completing higher studies there, he wanted to establish in Trichur the necessary infrastructure essential for diagnosis and treatment in modern medicine. Thus was born his brain child, the Polyclinic. That was the time when one had to go to Ernakulam or Coimbatore for a routine laboratory test or a simple x-ray. It is a measure of the farsightedness and utter disregard to personal gains that he preferred to float a limited company rather that start an institution of his own. It grew by leaps and bounds. We can all be justly proud that It is today one of the major diagnostic institutions in the whole of Kerala, with a clientele drawn from all parts of the state.

The following members constituted the first Board of Directors of the company

1. Dr.V.N.Krishna Iyer
2. Sri. M.R.Menon
3. Sri.P.N.Krishna Iyer
4. Sri.M.C.Nambudiripad

After a short stint as Managing Director, Nambudiripad had to leave the position
for personal reasons, but continued to be a director till 1976,when he assumed charge as Managing Director, which position he holds even today. He is the longest serving Managing Director of the company.

Other members who served the company with distinction as Managing Directors are Sri. V.N. Parasurama Iyer, Sri.V.N.Gopalakrisha Iyer, Dr. V.N.Krishna Iyer and Dr.C.J.David. Besides the Managing Directors and founding directors, the following distinguished members served the company as directors were Sri.Mookken Thomakkutty, Lakshmi Vilasam Krishna Iyer, Sri.P.D.Sebastian and Sri. K.S.Narayanan Nambudiripad.

Though the company is now known as a premier diagnostic centre, it actually began its operations as a Nursing Home. Mangalodayam ( P) LTD, Trichur, primarily a printing and publishing company, was running a Nursing Home in the Iyyappan Buildings ( Now Dharmodayam Co. building) in Round East. The nursing home was purchased by the Polyclinic immediately after its formation. Dr V.R.Menon was the RMO. Later X- ray department was started with Dr. K.G.Sangam, as the radiologist and laboratory followed with Dr.P.Narayana Menon as pathologist. It may be mentioned that the great poet, Changampuzha spent his last days as a patient in the Nursing Home.

After retirement from TB sanatorium, Mulakunnathu Kavu, Dr. C.J.David joined the nursing home as TB specialist. The existing building could not accommodate all the inpatients of Dr. V.N.Krishna Iyer and Dr.C.J.David. A three acre plot was purchased on the Ayyanthole Road in West Fort and two separate blocks of hospital buildings were constructed. One block was reserved exclusively for TB patients of Dr. David. However, the hospital sector was closed after the demise of Dr. Krishna Iyer in 1965.

Thereafter the company functioned mainly as a diagnostic institution. However, Dr. David , Dr. P.O.Ittooppunny DLO,( ENT specialist), Dr.A.F.Justin MS ( Orthopaedic surgeon) and Dr. Paul Kallukkaran FRCS (General Surgeon) had their consulting rooms in the company premises.

The business of the company saw a phenomenal growth and it became practically impossible to function in the existing Dharmodayam Building. Land measuring 23 cents on the Town Hall Road, was purchased from Dr. K.F.Manavalan and a two storey building constructed, each floor having a floor area of about 5500 Sq ft. ECG, Ultra sound scan, Histopathology and quite recently Colour Doppler were new additions to the wide range of diagnostic facilities.
